6 ‘The Twin Garlands’
'The Twin Garlands’ encompasses the twin salient features of ‘Patronage to Arts’ and the vital, absorbing theme ‘Sangita Cikitsa – Music Therapy’. Indian music of old, which is but Carnatic music in essence, owes its popularity to the lavish patronage of kings and aristocracy. This aspect has been specially canvassed specifically herein. Music therapy is in its infant stage in Bharat. The author gave the Theme Note Address at the two-day All-India symposium at Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts & Sangeetha Sabha, Mumbhai. It was attended by the cream of society, eminent doctors and a very large number of delegates, who sat through the entire proceedings with avid interest on both the days. It was a pioneering effort by the biggest Sabha east of the Suez. Quite soon, Apollo hospitals started a course in music therapy at Chennai. The topic enjoys high popularity in the West, though in this ancient land of music and musical life from birth to the last and the sine quo non compulsory presence of music at all festivals and functions, the study in music therapy has eluded and evaded the authorized, entitled attention of Universities so far. The theme in all its salient, multi-pronged aspects is presented in this book along with patronage. ‘Sing a song every day and keep the doctor away normally’ is the driving theme of the topic. The author has been waging an unrelenting crusade for the propagation of music therapy in the context of exploding population and the prohibitive costs of medicines and medical attention and for starting courses thereon by institutions.
